Barrel Racing Tips
Everyone wants a really broke, really confident horse to compete on, But don't have the answers to get them there. I have been inspired by several different people in my life of training performance horses and every issue goes back to slow repetition. Becoming one with the horse you have the opportunity to ride and the horse God created.
I've learned through trial and error over my last 50 years of young life ; ) that there has to be a bond of trust. Becoming one with your horse. His Buddy not his Master only. Horses cannot speak our human language, but they can comprehend repetitiousness. Using the same body cues in slow relaxed peaceful work can create the bond of trust. Fast, dramatic, traumatic work will make a horse shut down emotionally. I'm working on some videos to show you how to have fun training and become one with your horse. The barrel horse can be very broke, very calm, very confident, and we can overcome the bad name barrel horses have unfortunately earned in the past.
I hope We can be a blessing to you.
Hubby, J.B has roped on all our barrel horses, It helps...
Barrel Horse routines that correct most all issues.
* A Bit doesn't always solve a bad problem
* A rider is sometimes causing the problem by repetitively repeating the same wrong routine.
* Lessons for the rider are helpful through three day clinics after the horse is corrected by the trainer.
* Lynn Mckenzie barrel clinics are who I recommend.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE HOW TO RUIN A ROPE HORSE? NO SLOW WORK... 1. No slow work out of the box 2. Pull him up out of the pasture and go rope. 3. Not keeping him in shape can cripple them. 4. Running steer after steer with no scoring. 5. Not keeping them tuned up broke in the face - light and responsive. 6. No whoa 7. No flex 8. No bend (FLEX & BENDING)
We use barrels to circle repeatedly to keep their nose on the rim and push their rib out. Circle at a walk until they relax bend and puts their head down.(BOX WORK - RESET)
We use the heelomatic and the box to slow everything down and get rate, flex and headset. Every time you compete on your horse you take out all the handle and add charge. Go back to the practice pen and reincorporate his handle, position, rate etc. He cannotdo his best and will get nervous in the box without slow work. Use an empty box and lope out and stop spin and return. Do this several times a week to keep the edge off. This will help him leave flat - stop flat and give him confidence to relax.
